Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s key media advisor
and the brain behind his many publicity projects, Dhiren Avashia, quit on
Wednesday after nine years in the job. Avashia, 64, had joined the state’s
Information Department as director, electronic media — a post created for him —
in 2003.
A former journalist and director of Educational
Media Research Center at Gujarat University, Avashia was appointed essentially
to manage the national electronic media — where he had good contacts — which
was seen as hostile to Modi.
Though Avashia said he quit “to pursue my post
retirement plans only”, his sudden resignation in the crucial election year is
still a matter of speculation in state’s power corridors.
“There is no other reasons. My contract ended
three months before and I requested the Chief Minister to relieve me from my
duties so he agreed. I am planning to do my on consultancy job and spare more
time for writing on my choice of subjects,” Avashia said. People in the know,
who did not want to be identified, said he planned to join a leading vernacular
daily as editorial advisor.
Sources in the Chief Minister’s Office said
Avashia left because there wasn’t much for him to do. “There was a limited job
for him left as head of electronic media division as most of as most of the
electronic and national media management of CM has been outsourced to private
agencies. The post is likely to be discontinued,” the source said.
