June 21 was
declared as the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014.[1] Yoga, a physical, mental and spiritual practice having its origin over 6000 years ago in India aims to integrate the body and the mind.[2]
The declaration
of this day came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International
Day of Yoga by Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi during his address
to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014[3][4][5][6] wherein he stated:
"Yoga is an
invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and
body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and
nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise
but to discover the sense of oneness within yourself, the world and the nature.
By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with
climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."[7]
[8] In suggesting June 21, which is the Summer Solstice, as the International Day of
Yoga, Narendra Modi had said that the date is the longest day of the year in
the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.[9]
From the
perspective of yoga, the Summer Solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. The first full moon after
Summer Solstice is known as Guru Poornima. According to Sadhguru Jaggi
Vasudev, in the yogic lore, the first transmission of yoga by Shiva, the first Guru, is said to have begun on this
day.[10] Dakshinayana is also considered a time when
there is natural support for those pursuing spiritual practices.[11] Govind Gurbani Yog Guru / Vice President of
Rajasthan Swasthya Yog Parisad Jaipur India informed that on 21 June fifty
thousand followers of Yoga will perform Yoga in Rajasthan.

Here are the highlights from his speech:
Here are the highlights from his speech:
·
Did anyone ever think that Rajpath can become
'Yogapath'?
·
We are not only celebrating a day but we are
training the human mind to begin a new era of peace, amity.
·
Essential that human beings develop internally.
·
Yoga is not just for exercising limbs. If that was
true, people working in the circus would be called yogi's.
·
There will be no part of the world that will be
untouched by Yoga today.
·
I thank the United Nations and countries who
co-sponsored the resolution to mark this day as International Day of Yoga.
·
Mann, buddhi, shareer, aur
aatma (Heart, mind, body, and soul) have to work in harmony.

Visvesvaraya museum chips in
with exhibition
June 22, 2015, Bengaluru, DHNS
An exhibition on the ancient practice of Yoga
was inaugurated at the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM),
on the occasion of the first International Yoga Day, on Sunday.
The exhibition started with 150 people from across the city participating in various Yoga sessions in the morning.
Later, the exhibition was formally inaugurated by Nimhans director Dr P Satish Chandra. Speaking with Deccan Herald, K G Kumar, director of VITM, highlighted a number of aspects of the exhibition.
“The exhibition deals with a number of subjects such as the evolution of Yoga in various periods of history, various streams and schools of Yoga and the science behind it,” said Kumar. The exhibition will go on till July 15 at VITM. It is also being showcased at the Advanced Centre of Yoga at Nimhans till June 26. Dr Chandra talked about the benefits of Yoga and how, especially for children and the youth, it can serve as a life-saver at a time when there is intense competition in all fields. Highlighting the complexity of the functioning of the brain, he said while medical science knows about brain as a physical organ, no one knows about “mind.”
He said that there was a need to adopt this age-old knowledge at an early age to reap its benefits better. A quiz on Yoga and the screening of a movie on the history of Yoga were the other highlights.

Yog is essentially Hindu. Whoever is trying to
suggest that no religion is linked with Yog is misleading. Now can anybody tell
me what religion Patanjali followed ? Was it Islam ? Buddhism ? Christianity?
You can't take away credit for what rightfully belongs to Hinduism. Ashtang Yog
is a magical system. 1) Yam 2) Niyam 3) Asana (the one people did en-mass
yesterday) 4) Pranayam 5) Pratyahaar 6) Dhyan 7) Dharana 8) Samadhi. This is
all Hindu.

The Yoga Way of Life!
Derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, Yoga means
union of the individual consciousness or soul with the Universal Consciousness
or Spirit. Yoga is a 5000 year old Indian body of knowledge. Though many think
of yoga only as a physical exercise where people twist, turn, stretch, and
breathe in the most complex ways, these are actually only the most superficial
aspect of this profound science of unfolding the infinite potentials of the
human mind and soul.
The science of Yoga imbibe itself the complete
essence of the Way of Life, including - Gyan Yoga or philosophy, Bhakti Yoga or path of devotional bliss, Karma Yoga or path of
blissful action, and Raja
Yoga or path of mind control. Raja Yoga is further divided into eight parts. At the heart of the Raja Yoga system, balancing and unifying these various approaches, is the practice of
Yoga Asana.
“Yog” means Karma without
worry about the fruit, past and future. We have to perform Karma in present
time. So don’t worry about anything, while you perform Karma.
“Karma” means any type of activity you have to do.
